I'm Nate and I help people design their ideal renovation...

So many home owners live in houses that don't fit their lifestyle or personality.  I've been in the home building business since 2005 and I've seen to many people who work hard to settle for the status quo in houses. Would you wear vintage 1960's or 70's clothes today? Probably not. But many people live in houses that match an ideal world of yesteryear.

But Houses are way more expensive than clothes...

You are absolutely right, but like you plan for an education, a vacation, or a big family/community event, PLANNING is KEY to reaching your financial goals especially with your house. What I see in renovations all the time is a lack of strategic renovation planning. I call it "hackitecture" - the result of poor or no house renovation planning. It is sad that poor planning in house renovations leaves people with houses that look renovated, homes that don't honor the fabric of the neighborhood or worse a mishmash of styles that come from the clearance shelf.

Why HomeRenoIdeas.com?

I developed this website to help my peers (but everyone is welcome) get a grip on small home renovation. Most of us are starting out with our first homes, many of us are still dealing with student loans, but as we work towards our dreams we know and understand the importance of strategic planning. We all know the first step to a goal is getting a vision in mind. This website develops vision and showcases design expertise for realizing your dream home.

My design philosophy

My design work promotes the classical form of architecture, the subtle forms of mathematical proportion, the historic fabric of local craftsmanship. I love small houses just outside of small down towns: The quaint neighborhoods where history and family are uniquely woven together, the main streets that showcase individuality and commerce, the town square where friends and family meet, these are the places that inspire me. My philosophy is to honor the character of your neighborhood, respect the values of history and innovate old forms.

What do I work on?

Homes from our Grandparents era.

Typical 40's House

We all love the walk able downtown neighborhoods, consequently a majority of our first timer homes were built in the 1930's 40's and 50's. They are small and largely a product of the initial boom of suburban development that came about in the middle of the last century. They make great starter homes, they just don't match our social and family lifestyles. Small kitchens, divided up rooms, and limited day-lighting they need updated and renovated.

My Story-

The neighbors must have thought I and my siblings were crazy. My first 'success' was when I took the old wooden gates from our back yard fence and cobbled together a little 'cottage' on the hill behind our house. We had a childhood full of imagination, rustic creations, and plenty of splinters. Today we fondly talk about growing up with the creations I fabricated.

Out of high school, I framed houses as a carpenter's apprentice learning the bones of building. Later as a cabinet makers apprentice I worked in the fine crafts world becoming an avid lover of architectural details. When I became a licensed builder in Michigan I started a design/build company that tempered my understanding of the complex dynamic of look versus practicality.

With my Masters in Architecture and my soon to be realized dream of being an Architect, I am completing my state license (a few to go) examinations.  Today, guided by the aesthetic influences of European and American architecture and the timeless forms of classical architecture; I have begun my career in practical residential design with my sights set on designing amazing and beautiful homes.
